Newsletter WEEK 37 2015/16

Dear 3rd grade parents!

Now that the dust has settled after a hectic first few weeks of school we would like to fill you in on what's been going on in Grade 3.

The first few weeks were spent assessing students and getting to know each other. We also completed a unit on Learning focusing on the parts of the brain. The third graders did a great job of sharing their learning with the other Primary classes.

We started off our next unit, Chocolate, with a delicious chocolate tasting on Monday. We tried chocolates from six different countries and the students had to describe their taste and guess where they were from. We learned how chocolate is made and we followed that by designing our own chocolate bar wrappers!

We will focus on the following assessable skill during the chocolate unit:

- Be able to use secondary sources to obtain geographical information.

The following rubric will be used to keep track of the students' progress throughout the unit. Although we will discuss this in class, it would be beneficial to talk about it with your child at home. We will be using the internet, atlases and encyclopaedias to research specific countries and their main geographical features such as mountains, rivers, islands, lakes and valleys.

I’m getting used to it:
I can find out some geographical information but I need some help from my teacher or a friend to work out how to do this.
I’m getting better:
I can find different information from at least two different places.
I can say where I found the information so other people will know where to look. My teacher helps me to look at sources I wouldn’t normally use.
I’m really getting it:
I can find out information by myself and I can use at least three different sources.
I look carefully at all the sources to check that the information I find in one source is also shown in another source.

In other news, this week the 3rd graders have been experiencing our new MAP tests in the areas of Math, Language and Reading. Considering this was all new to both students and staff everything went very well.

Both classes have voted for two Friends representatives this week. Owen and Abril were chosen in 3v and Aliyan and Tara were chosen in 3c.

Coming up the next 2 weeks:

- Röris (Monday the 14th at 10.15)
- School Jog (Wednesday the 16th at 9.20) - please note students are dismissed at 12.45 this day
We now have 6 parents helping out at the jog. No more volunteers needed!
- Healthy breakfast (Friday the 18th at 7.30)
- No school (Thursday the 24th & Friday the 25th)

Have a nice weekend!
