Week 19 Newsletter

Dearest Grade 3 Families,

Excitement, fun, togetherness is what is ahead of us in the next few weeks. The last kilometers of this learning marathon we all started a year ago are just around the corner. Please enjoy last week's and this week's updates and news.

In IPC, students were introduced to the Big Idea of our new unit. Besides learning about Tropical Rainforests and their biodiversity we will encourage awareness of the importance of saving rainforests in general for the survival of our planet and encourage each other to take part in sound ecological practices at home, schools and in our community.
Students are beginning to make connections. One of our students realised that Tropical edible products are called Tropical because these products are found between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.
Today we sipped delicious Tropical drinks, students planned their recipes after researching which food could be found in the rainforests. Mango, tomatoes, pineapples, bananas, cinnamon, coconut, vanilla were just some of the ingredients that we tasted.

In Maths, we have started a new concept: Fractions. Students are developing their understanding of fractions and decimals.

In language we have started a new journey, we have begun to write another descriptive text. Grade 3 writers started off this adventure by experiencing a real International Banquet. Great discussions, scrumptious dishes and cheerful atmosphere were the seed of this exciting project.

Today, we had our Class Assembly, 5th graders presented our New Learner Profile Word which is "Reflective". Awards were given for "Courageous" students in 3C Kanta and Iria and in 3V Isabelle, Ryan and Lawrence. Robert, Lotta, Bonnie and Taiki were also given awards for their excellent work in Science. Elisa, Elliott, Irene and Itay were given awards for music  Well done!

Mrs Sethi will be replacing Mrs D'Andrea-Nordin until the 20th of May, after that Ms Dale will be assisting in our classrooms till the end of the year.

Developmental Reading Assessments are going to take place next week. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in the mornings.

Extra News:

In the afternoon on Monday, June 8th, the entire SIS community will be participating in a "Walk for Nepal" event. You have hopefully noticed some of the posters around the school.

HOW IT WORKS

1. Students will be given a sponsorship form and envelope next Wednesday, May 13th. They will have a little over three weeks to collect sponsors who are encouraged to make a donation for every 1 km/ walked/ run on June 8th.

Students can ask family members, neighbours, friends, etc. to sponsor them. Before the event, sponsors need to fill in the first two columns the form, including donation amount/km, signature and address. A "lum" sum donation can also be promised instead of the "per km" donation. They should not lose the form or envelope!

2.  On June 8th, from 2:00-3:30 (after the utspring) we will be in HumlegĂ„rden with homeroom teachers along a one km route. On the day of the event, students will be given a ‘passport’ onto which they will receive stickers- 1 sticker for every km walked. Students should bring water bottles and wear their PE kit.

3. After June 8th, students will show their passport to sponsors, collect the funds they have raised, and return the completed form, envelope and funds to school (by June 11th).

We have three parent volunteers; however, to make this successful, we will need to have as many of you on board as possible.

Thanks in advance for your support. I think with this event we have the opportunity to make a big impact on some lives in Nepal.

Have a lovely weekend,

Best wishes,
Ms Cruz, Mrs Kinch and Mrs D'Andrea Nordin
