Spring is here and our third graders seem to have a lot of renewed energy. This energy has been put into very productive activities and lessons.
The day after our Sports Break we travelled to Gamla Stan and went to the Nobel Museum. Our friendly guides gave us some information about Alfred Nobel and the Nobel prizes and we were able to do some chemistry by making a very effective soap bubble mixture. We are coming to the end of our unit Significant People and are doing our final assessment next week. We will gradually move into our next unit which is the much anticipated Rainforests one.
Last Friday we supported Anti-bullying day by wearing something yellow to school. Our third graders spent a lot of time on this subject. We first read some stories together, we were then split into groups and each group had to create a skit about different forms of bullying i.e. physical, emotional cyber bullying. While one group acted out their skit, the audience raised their hands when they saw the bullying take place. At the end of the skit, we asked our students if they could come up with a solution and they could!
On the same day we celebrated International Mother Tongue Day by sitting together with other students from first and second grade that share the same home language as each other. The volume of the lunchroom was a true indicator of how appreciated this lunch was.
Parent Student Teacher conferences begin next week! Our students are the ones leading this Spring conference. They have prepared the work they would like to present. Please make sure that your child attends the conference so that you get a full picture of what makes them proud and what they can continue working on.
Language
In Ms Cruz and Mrs Kinch's language groups, we are working on a new writing genre which is called Expository writing. This is a genre of writing that informs, describes, or explains with text types such as autobiography, biography, descriptive, essay, informational report and media article. Our students are getting inspiration from their Sports Break journal to write a descriptive text about one single experience that they went through. They have a rubric to help them be successful with their work and one of their main goals is to add sensory details, interesting adjectives and figurative language. Help your child think of sensory details and ask them to describe something you have seen by either smelling, touching, listening, tasting or looking at it.
Math
We have completed our Multiplication assessment, and our students ave reviewed, corrected and reflected on their work. It was productive to talk to each student and hear their motivation behind their answers. We have now moved onto our Division unit. We are looking at the relationship division has with multiplication. Students are able to see that division is repeated addition and with hands on activities when to use multiplication or division.
We look forward to meeting you next week. Enjoy your weekend and let's hope for continued sun!
Warmest regards,
Mrs Kinch, Ms Cruz and Mrs D'Andrea-Nordin
